Being skinny is something that many people strive to be, they think that its what they should be. Eating disorders, most of the time, are a result. Sometimes they might come across event that reminds them of something that hurt them emotionally or physically, in result they may do harmful things to themselves, this is called a trigger. Triggers can go off in an instant. When you Develop an eating disorder you not only affect yourself but you also affect the people around you.
Today our society has an overall idea of what being skinny is. When we think about being perfect we think about beauty, fashion, confidence, but overall we relate with the word ‘skinny’. Ali Malik explains, ‘They create an idealized version of humanity, and from their creation are born the desire to become that idealized form. These trends establish an unrealistic standard that we feel we need to live up to. This beauty ideal may lead to eating disorders, mental health issues, body mutilation, and even suicide.’ To a large volume of people, clothes look better on tall, lean frames. The Center for Eating Disorders reports, ‘We’ve always worried about how we look, act and think. Eating disorders include a range of conditions that involve an obsession with food, weight and appearance. The obsession is often so strong that it disrupts an individual’s health, social and familial relationships, occupations and daily activities.’ Everyone looks up to the people who have the perfect bodies, or perfect hair. But don’t you think that they have taken it to far as to starve themselves to be that perfect person that they strive to be.

In the U.S. alone there are 24 million women, and men that suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder whether it’s young or old. Twenty four Million people! Twenty four million people that suffer every day, going through depression, just to fit the ‘status quo’. ‘Imagine waking up every morning, struggling to get out of bed. The room spins. Stumbling over to the mirror, you study and criticize every last inch of your body as the words ‘fat, ugly, worthless’ echo in your head.’ Sometimes someone may say something about you good or bad and immediately that trigger goes off. There are three different types of triggers, physical, psychological, and biological. Eating Disorder Glossary states, ‘A trigger, refers to a person, place, thing, event or emotion that sets an eating disorder in place.’ Social media influences, previous abuse, current abuse, peer pressure and anxiety, or even one single word is or can be a trigger.
Eating disorders change all areas of your life. With constant crash diets, the binging and purging, a compulsion to exercise, these doings cause serious damage to your body. Self-induced vomiting, laxative abuse, malnutrition and dehydration, they all destroy your internal organs. If you develop an eating disorder than you can subject yourself to chronic conditions such as obesity heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and cancer. Tabitha Farrar remarks, ‘Watching a person that you love suffer is always going to be painful, but with an eating disorder the stress is often worsened because to anyone who has not experienced an eating disorder it seems as if it should be so simple and easy to get better. Melinda Smith, and Jeanne Segal states ‘It can be scary and embarrassing to seek help for an eating disorder, but gaining support from a trusted friend, family member, religious leader, school counselor, or work colleague is for many people the first step on the road to recovery. Alternatively, some people find it less threatening to confide in a treatment specialist, such as an eating disorder counselor or nutritionist.’ It will be hard to help someone with an eating disorder because it’s hard to break what has become for them a lifestyle. Sometimes people don’t reach out for help and die of this disease. Some are lucky and live.
There is no singular reason as to why someone acquires an Eating Disorder. When Diagnosing someone with this disorder, many factors are taken into consideration.Is it really so important that in order to look like a twig people are willing to give up food and starve themselves to death for only a little contentment on the outside? The look of a person on the inside is what really matters.
